Broadcom and Google Cloud have entered into a strategic partnership that aims to reshape VMware into a product that reflects its $69 billion valuation. The two companies are collaborating to revamp VMware software delivery methods and licensing for improved customer agility and efficiency.

New and current subscribers can access VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) across various environments including Google Cloud VMware Engine as well as through their private data centers.

Seamless migration and enhanced flexibility for VMware and Google Cloud users

Through this partnership, current VCF subscribers can transfer the remaining value of their subscriptions to Google Cloud VMware Engine and migrate between their cloud and data center environments as their needs evolve.

They can also purchase a fully integrated Google Cloud VMware Engine environment, complete with VCF software directly from Google Cloud. Broadcom maintains that the new licensing and delivery methods will result in easy migration and offer subscribers the combined advantages of public cloud agility and economy with private cloud security.

Krish Prasad, General Manager of VMware’s Cloud Foundation division, highlighted the benefits, stating, “By running VMware Cloud Foundation on Google Cloud VMware Engine, customers benefit from a highly efficient cloud operating model that provides the scale and agility of public cloud with the security and performance of the private cloud.”

Mark Lohmeyer, Vice President and General Manager of Compute and Machine Learning Infrastructure at Google Cloud, emphasized Google Cloud’s commitment to simplifying cloud migration and digital transformation initiatives. “Through this model, our customers can realize the unique benefits of Google Cloud VMware Engine, such as four 9’s cluster-level uptime, deeply integrated networking, and a unified Google experience.”

A unified experience and reduced operating costs

The collaboration enables customers to simplify their infrastructure by migrating virtual machines and workloads to Google Cloud and benefit from its robust networking architecture.

They can manage their cloud-based resources using VMware tools and access native containerized applications to gain a unified Google Cloud experience.

This new approach enables customers to scale their workloads into Google Cloud and pay only for resources they use.

The collaboration between Google Cloud and VMware may help to smooth over some of the challenges VMware customers — especially resellers and managed service providers (MSPs) have faced following its acquisition by Broadcom. The initiative aims to provide partners with a robust, portable, hybrid cloud solution that has the potential to unlock new revenue streams.

Mainline Information Systems’ Director of Technology recently sat down with Channel Insider: Partner POV’s Katie Bavoso to discuss how MSPs can handle the end of the VMware Partner Connect program.
