5 Proven Ways to Motivate Even The Dullest Employees

Sep 13, 2022 | 0 comments

Keeping your team motivated will solve 99% of the team-related issues you face as a COO.

How am I so sure?

Almost all of our COO Alliance members have made their life easier by energizing their team.

You don’t need fancy leadership development programs or a YPO membership to begin with…

Keeping your employees motivated at work is a great start as a leader.

Research shows that the performance of your employees goes up by 20% and they are 87% less likely to leave – if they are motivated at their work.

An added bonus is that your hires stick around longer if they are motivated at the work they do.

So how do you get them motivated?

If you can’t bring Tony Robbins to your office every single day – then here are 5 alternative ways to bring the mojo out of any team member:

#1 Motivate Your Team Through Meaning:

Waking up in the morning, getting ready, and commuting to work can get tedious after a point.

People don’t want to be writers, designers, accountants, or developers.

They crave to do something meaningful.

Does your team go through an existential crisis on Sunday evenings?

Or are they pumped to start work…

Ask yourself these questions:

Why does your company exist?

Who are the other people who benefit because of your company?

Are you helping small business owners in the US?

Are you helping change the financial literacy of the country?

Are you helping young citizens to eat healthy whole food?

There should be a strong meaning behind the existence of your company.

It needs to help an external individual (most likely the customer).

This is what gives people a sense of meaning in their work.

Make it emotional and make your employees know the real value behind the work they do.

#2 Give Your Team Good Growth Opportunities:

Your team needs to grow.

Most of your best-performing employees will be the ones that crave professional growth.

They want to get better at what they do.

They want to get paid more and move up the ladder.

They want to join communities like Young Presidents Organization & the COO Alliance.

Make sure you give them enough training and skill-building opportunities.

Very little things make someone as happy as the dopamine hit they get from the process of mastery.

But getting better at work is not all…

Be generous with giving timely promotions to those who earned them.

Don’t be bothered by what others will think, if at all anything they too will be motivated to grow.

#3 Celebrate Every Milestone:

Celebrating milestones & small wins along the way is a great way to keep your team motivated.

Every time they finish a big hairy project – take them out.

Give them a shoutout.

You can even make a soft board in your office every time a team/ employee achieves a milestone.

It shows them how far they have come in a tangible way.

Most people don’t want to break that positive emotional streak.

They keep moving forward by giving out the best work.

#4 Motivate Your Team By Giving Them Autonomy:

Micromanaging is an energy-draining process for both parties.

I know it can be tempting to keep a hold of your team and ensure the right work gets done.

But if you can show your team that you trust them and get them to work responsibly on their own – you can save an insane amount of time & energy.

Offer them flexible scheduling.

Get their input in all important decisions that involve them.

Let them give their opinions & share their ideas.

Most people work best when given a sense of independence.

#5 Ask Your Team What They Need:

Instead of trying to do guesswork on what might motivate them – just ask your team.

Conduct a survey/ poll.

Ask each of them individually.

Some will be motivated by work/life balance.

Some by salary & bonus.

Some will be motivated by recognition.

While others might be motivated just for the lifestyle your work culture gives them.

Whatever the case it’s important you identify what motivates each of your employees.
